Migration update

Curlew

Between 40,000 and 50,000 migratory wildfowl and waders travel to the Burry Inlet to spend the winter every year. This year, we saw the unprecedented early arrival in July of hundreds of these birds due to cold weather and flooding resulting in failed breeding in the north, particularly in Iceland.

Some of these birds have now travelled further south, while others continue to arrive. Current counts include 532 black-tailed godwits, 53 greenshank, around 300 curlew, 38 lapwing, 465 oystercatcher and 273 redshank.

Find out more about the mass migration at one of our migration walks, at 1pm at weekends during October and November (excluding October half term). Until then, you can brush up your bird ID skills at one of our family bird watching sessions. Drop into the observatory between 11am and 12pm at weekends during September to have a look through our telescope at the birds on the lagoon.
