The wait is over!

The first four Bewick's swans flew into Slimbridge this morning,the latest arrival date since 1969! It was no coincidence that their arrival occurred alongside a drop in temperatures, crystal clear skies and a lull in the south-westerly head winds that have dominated in recent weeks.

We are even more excited to see that the first arrivals are a family! Swan volunteer Steve Heaven quickly identified the adult pair from their distinct bill patterns as regular Slimbridge visitors Nurton and Nusa. They are familiar with the reserve as they have spent the last five winters here. Their cygnets have now learnt the migration route from their parents and we are hoping that they will also become regular fixtures here.

It is likely that the change in conditions has also encouraged thousands of others to push on with their long journeys across Europe. More news to follow...
