200+ pied wagtail roost returns
The winter pied wagtail roost has returned to the reedbeds.
The winter pied wagtail roost has returned to the wetland reedbeds last week with 100 -200 pied wags perching up in trees and hedges before descending as a group into the reeds. The pied wags usually use the reedbed near our Reedbed hide but the presence of the marsh harriers seems to have moved them south to the small reedbed behind the ReedswampExhibit.
Other small birds roost among the pied wags. Look for reed buntings and meadow pippits.
A pair of peregrines have been showing well on the Offham hangar. A sparrowhawk is also a regular sight over the wet grasslands too.
Little egrets continue to roost in the trees to the left of the Ramsar hide. This year they have been joined by a cattle egret – look for its yellow bill instead of the black bills of the little egrets. We had eight cormorants one morning on the lagoon between the Ramsar and Sand martin hides.
Kingfishers are showing well
Three green woodpeckers at the Lapwing hide on Monday.
We are still seeing common darter dragonflies when the sun comes out.
