6 November 2023 sightings- White-rumped Sandpiper

A second White-rumped Sandpiper for the year!

Sightings for today have ben very exciting indeed, read on for a roundup.

Estuary Tower

A lunchtime look produced a Great Northern Diver on the Severn, it took off and circled but flew high downriver. The juvenile White-rumped Sandpiper relocated to the Dumbles and fed on the saltmarsh pools often in the company of the 100s of Dunlin that are present. At least two Little Stints were present with 1000 Golden Plover flying about over looking to settle. The escaped/released Lesser White-fronted Goose was grazing on the Dumbles although it was on the Tack Piece early morning.

A Marsh Harrier, Peregrine and Buzzard were interacting early morning. At least 16 Crane were on the Severn sands with 14 Russian White-fronted Geese (another 20 were on the Tack Piece so 34 on site today)

Tack Piece

Twenty Russian White-fronted Geese were among the Greylag/Canada Geese, flocks of Lapwing and Golden Plover also had a few Redshank among them. 100s of Wigeon and Teal were on the flood.

Top New Piece

A Garganey was among 859 Teal and uncounted Shoveler and Wigeon, single Avocet, 600+ mobile Black-tailed Godwit (three colour ringed) and 25+ Ruff also feeding on the wet fields.

Rushy Hide

Three Spotted Redshank, 4 Redshank, 3 Black-tailed Godwit, Snipe, 23 Pochard, 50 Pintail among the birds present, a juvenile White-rumped Sandpiper was seen early morning had flown off by 08:15am.

South Lake

A brief visit by the White-rumped Sandpiper with 15 Dunlin as well as 14 Pochard, 50 Shoveler, 200+ Teal, 5 Cattle Egret, an adult Mediterranean Gull was among the other gull species.
