A cold night and morning, shallow waters froze which meant the Wigeon flocks moved to the estuary and some waders were forced to move to other areas. A sunny start to the day encouraged at least 8 Song Thrushes to sing with two Chaffinch also in song for good measure.

Tack Piece

The E. White-fronted Geese were roosting on the few areas of open water but lifted and flew to fields to the North. A flock of 700 Dunlin joined the Lapwing as well as a few Black-tailed Godwits, flock of Ruff, Redshank and the Spotted Redshank. A Peregrine took a bird at 0900am which scattered the other species here.

Holden Tower

Four Buzzards sat on fence posts and trees, the Barnacle Goose flock, 200 Wigeon and 60 Teal were on the Dumbles or scrape. Two Oystercatcher on the shore of the pool with 40 Wigeon.

South Lake

2 Oystercatcher, 400 Lapwing, c40 Black-tailed Godwit, c30 Dunlin on the frozen wader scrape. A single Great Crested Grebe, c70 Tufted Duck, c30 Pochard, c60 Shoveler on the deep lake with Mallard, Gadwall and Teal as well. Seven Cormorants were roosting on the island and fence.

Zeiss Hide

A Goshawk flew through low from the Dumbles to the South Finger extension flushing all in its path. An increase in Avocets, a party of 15 on the unfrozen flood with 400 Lapwing, 30 Dunlin, 100 Wigeon and 270 Teal. 25 Snipe could be seen with careful searching in the cut rushes. Grey Heron fishing in the channel.

Kingfisher Hide

2 Bullfinches and c15 Chaffinches were feeding on the bank on or below the shrubs.
