A carpet of wigeon

It appears there has been a small arrival of wigeon overnight with just 100 seen yesterday but over 500 present today.  The bulk of the numbers, around 450 birds, were feeding in their distinctive carpet formation in front of the Van de Bovenkamp Hide.

South Lake Hides

A quiet South Lake to start the day with only 8 Black-tailed Godwit present along with 15 Redshank, 14 Ruff, 4 Avocet and 40+ Lapwing.  Three Snipe were foraging along the back shoreline and a Water Rail was calling from here too.  At least 13 Pochard were on the deep lake with 71 Shoveler with the Tufted Duck and Mallard.  A Kingfisher and Little Grebe were also seen.

Zeiss Hide

A small flock of 32 Black-tailed Godwit were feeding along the shoreline with a single Dunlin and 12 Ruff.  Two Redshank were roosting with the Lapwing flock.  The carpet of Wigeon were grazing in front of the Van de Bovenkamp Hide whilst 5 Pochard were on the pond here too.

Holden Tower

A Marsh Harrier flew over the seawall and flushed the ducks from the Tack Piece early morning, most of which moved to the Rushy.  A Little Egret was along the river bank and a flock of Golden Plover were heard overhead in the low cloud.  At least 3 Goldcrest were foraging in the copse in front of the tower and a Kingfisher was seen on the pool from the Knott Hide.
