A whole lot of half-term family fun for a whole lot less
Make the most of the milder weather and discover more about the natural world by bringing the family down to WWT Washington Wetland Centre this coming half-term holiday.
Build a bug hotel or bird box, make your own wind chime and win a prize daily by playing our hook-a-duck species game (1.30-3.30pm, prices vary). Plus, discover the life that lurks in dead trees on a mini-beast hunt through Hollowood and create a woodland home for the creatures that you find (11am-noon and 1-2pm, FREE).
As well as our half-term activities, other exciting seasonal highlights around our site include our grey herons, which are returning to Wader Lake to nest (watch them on live CCTV from the café!); our call ducks, which have laid the first eggs of the year, and our Hawaiian geese (or nenes – pronounced ‘naynays’), which are also starting to nest. You can see them wandering around in pairs in the Close Encounters feeding area, with the males noisily warning off any competitors as they mark their territories.
Our feeding station at Hawthorn Wood hide is also very busy with lots of colourful woodland birds, which are ideal for young ones to sit and watch. There are ID charts underneath the windows.
Become a WWT member when you visit and not only will you get your entrance fee refunded, but you can then enjoy great days out for a full 12 months for FREE. The centre is open 364 days a year and with annual family membership only £64 for two adults and up to six children (or just £5.33 a month, plus a free book or jigsaw for joining by Direct Debit) it ‘pays for itself’ after just three-and-a-bit visits. Ask a member of staff or visit www.wwt.org.uk/support-us/become-a-member-today for details.
