An evening with the Swavesey and Over Conservation Society (SOCS)
This week we visited the Swavesey and Over Conservation Society. The talk had a very autumnal feel-especially when one member walked in with a crate full of apples!
The meeting started with Francis kindly introducing myself and Karen to the group and I kicked off with a talk about the migratory swans that visit WWT Welney Wetland Centre over winter (and they have now arrived! In fact several groups have been piling onto the reserve today). Having talked at a bit too much length, Karen then took over to describe the second half of the session – mono printing.
Although approached with a bit of trepidation, people soon got into it, especially after being fed and watered with the arrival of tea and biscuits. I was impressed with some participant’s wetland plant knowledge -identifying the materials we had just based on the smell and the look of the stems! And whilst some got on with the printing, others were enticed by my swans wings which led onto an interesting discussion about how swans are interlinked with mythology and what it is exactly about swans that captures the human heart and imagination to weave these tales. Of course the whole point of this project is to listen to the people around this area and find out what these birds and this habitat means to them and I find it fascinating that in every session I’ve heard such different stories from people and how they connect to them.
The Swavesey and Over Conservation Society (SOCS) autumn/ winter meets are held on the second Wednesday of the month at Over Town hall, 7.30pm. So if you have a keen interest in the natural world, go along and join this friendly group, details of their upcoming events are below.
