Another Day of Sun

Yesterday started warm with again more sun and temperatures increasing. But even with the increasing heat there are still lots of birds to see.

Rushy

Lots of shelduck and tufted duck were present here, with a brood of shelduck ducklings. There were also chicks belonging to avocets, at least 6 adults and 3 chicks, and black-headed gulls of varying sizes. And 2 lapwings seen on the middle causeway.

Holden Tower and Tack Piece

Just outside the Martin Smith hide was a little egret hiding among the reeds. Also on the Tack Piece were 2 cranes along with 7 barnacle geese. And again more avocets, 5, were present here. From the Holden Tower on the edge of the Saltmarsh were 6 curlew and 4 lapwing. Lots of warblers can be heard calling with brief sightings of goldfinches and bullfinches.

Zeiss Hide

Again more avocets and lapwings could be seen from the Zeiss, along with 3 cranes enjoying the sunshine on the island. Two little egrets could be seen briefly between the reeds.

South Lake

The crane pair are still incubating their two eggs on the little island. Two avocets are still sitting on nests, with at least 4 hatched chicks easily visible among the adults, at least 12. More chicks again with the black-headed gulls can be seen on the islands. There was a flock of 88 black-tailed godwits many now in breeding plumage and a cormorant was perched looking over the lake.

At the kingfisher hide the pair are still feeding young, with glimpses of them and can be seen flying past the Discovery Hide.

Also, two red kites were seen flying over the centre early in the morning.
