Arctic Tern

An Adult Arctic Tern graced the Mere just before 1pm for about 10 mins before disappearing into the murky drizzle. Scarce birds on the reserve despite local breeders along the Ribble Estuary.

Still big numbers of Black-tailed Godwits with 2000+ on the Mere again today, also 3 Green Sandpiper on the Mere, 1 Common Sandpiper, 20+ Ruff, 20+ Snipe and 500+ lapwing.

Elsewhere on site there were another 3 Green Sandpiper out from Ron Barker Hide along with 12 Ruff, 20 Teal, 10 Snipe and 4 Pink-footed Goose which have stayed with us throughout the Summer despite being able to fly.

The juvenile Peregrine was around again terrorising the Lapwing and Godwit flocks. A juv male Sparrowhawk flew over the Mere otherwise Buzzard and Kestrel were seen.

No reports today of yesterdays Cattle Egret so far.

A count of 100 Snipe was made on site in recent days on the outer part of the reserve.
