Arrival news

Osprey Arrival

Great news this afternoon at Caerlaverock with our first confirmed sighting of an Osprey on the live nest camera for the 2011 breeding season. Whilst we have had reports of a couple of sightings around the nest site over the last couple of days, we were unable to confirm the identity of the birds - it seems likely that these may have been other ospreys just passing through on their way north.

However this afternoon around 2.30pm what is almost certainly our regular breeding female landed on the nest twice , looking very much at home and in great condition. Though this bird has bred here the last two years successfully , you can never take their return in the spring for granted- after all it's a migration to west africa of several thousand miles and many hazards, even for adult birds.

We can only hope her regular male partner turns up soon too and that 2011 is another sucessful breeding season.

You can now view live images from the nest in our Visitor Centre every day from 10am - 4pm.
