Avocets
Fears mounted this morning when there was no sign of adults or the three young at the
Holden Tower where the first ever young in Gloucestershire were hatched on
wednesday. A lone adult was see from the Zeiss and there were reports of an adult
aggresively mobbing large Gulls there as well. But it wasnt until late morning that one
chick was glimsed from the Kingfisher Hide and there have been further reports that all
three have been seen there. A long walk of around 500M for the three day old chicks.
Cranes
The four Cranes from the Somerset reintroduction scheme once again roosted in the
Gosling field north of the car park where they may be drawn to a captive bird there or
perhaps even to the nearby Crane School where they were reared and this years crop
of young Cranes destined to be released in the Somerset Levels are currently being
reared.
They seem to have a preference for the Dumbles viewable from the Holden Tower in
the morning, but can often be seen flying around the reserve during the day and have
used a number of different fields around the site so keep your eyes open.
Other Breeding Birds
Lapwing still incubating and protecting young can be seen from the Zeis, Holden and
South Lake.
Oystercatchers nesting at many sites around the reserve best viewed from the Holden
where young have just hatched, the South Lake where there are 3 pairs and the Rushy wheer one pair should be hatching any day now.
Shovelers , several pairs around the hide look like they may well be incubating. We
would be very interested to hear of any sightings of broods for this shy species.
Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Cettis and Reed Bunting all obviouse from Holden,
Zeiss and South Finger hides.
