Awash with waders

Its a lovely sunny Boxing Day with clear blue skies and a reserve full of birds, not least the Tack Piece and New Piece fields.

Zeiss Hide

A great display from the Peregrines this morning causing chaos amongst the birds.  Ducks include around 400 Wigeon, over 1000 Teal and 194 Pintail.  Hidden amongst their ranks were 3 Ruff, 2 Redshank and 3 Black-tailed Godwits along with several hundred Lapwing.

Kingfisher Hide

THE place to be this morning with a Bottom New Piece completely covered with waders.  See our video on Twitter here.  Around 1000 Lapwing were present with over 300 Golden Plover, 800 Dunlin and 700 Wigeon all feeding close to the hide.  Other waders amongst them included 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Curlew, 4 Redshank and 2 Ruff.  Four gorgeous Gadwall were on the pond with the pair of Little Grebe.

Rushy Hide & Peng Observatory

A count of 105 Bewick's Swans this morning, with some already leaving before the morning feed.  Three Redshank were feeding on the muddy margins along with around 120 Lapwing.  The hybrid Wigeon was also present this morning, grazing at the back of the scrape.

Holden Tower and Walkway hides

Two Cranes were on the Tack Piece this morning along with around 500 Wigeon who were busy grazing on the edge of the scrape.  Out on The Dumbles the Brent Goose was with the Canada Goose flock and over 1000 Wigeon were on the scrape in front of the hide.  A Stonechat was in the hedgerow to the north.
