Beaver catch - night 2

Last night I set the traps at around 6 o'clock. We set them at dusk, but have to hang around so that we can check they aren't set off by moorhens while its still light. The moorhens like to have a nosy in them, once I'd done that I had a snooze in the beaver lodge.

I woke up about 7.40 and the beavers were already out and about at this time swimming around. I checked the traps and they were still set. I stayed and watched for a while and I could tell that Twiggy, our mum beaver, was going to go in one of the traps. Sure enough at around 8 o'clock Twiggy ventured in.

We did the usual of getting a crate and weighing her, we checked it was Twiggy using a microchip scanner. she weighed 25kg, which was similar to last year so she is doing really well. She is fully grown now, so transfering her from one to other was interesting as she is really strong but looked really healthy. Her feet were looking good, her tail was gorgeous with no scars, which is a good sign and her fur was beautiful and shiny. She was released back into the pen and I went back to the warden's Tower for a snooze in my hammock.

At midnight I headed back down to the beaver lodge and two more beavers were in the traps. They were two kits from this year, the one who we caught last night and a new one. We weighed and microchipped the new one, who weighed 9.5kg.

Nothing much else happened afterwards, the traps will be set again tonight and fingers crossed for catching dad and the other two juveniles from last year.
