Beaver catches start

We will be starting beaver catches tonight.

The cages are in the enclosure all year round and we feed the beavers from the cages to get them used to going in and out of them. So tonight we will actually set the traps and our outdoor team will come along throughout the night to check on them.  We will be looking to do three things: a health check on the adult beavers, put microchips in the kits born this year and we will be cathing up last years young to take them to their new home.

For the time being the beavers will need to go into quarantine in Devon before going to their new home and I will keep you informed as to their progress.  Anyone watching the beaver webcam tonight will probably see a lot of lights and people walking around the enclosure.

Alex, the warden who looks after the mammals will update this diary everyday to let you know how the night went, and anything interesting we have found out about the beavers.

In other news, I have been in a development meeting all day and it is looking very promising that we will soon have an initial plan for Martin Mere's 5 year development plan. It is a really exciting time and I am looking forward to hearing feedback from staff.
