Swan numbers increasing

This week more swans have been arriving at WWT Welney, making the reserve very busy.  We will be counting the whooper and Bewick's swans on Tuesday 15 November, but have got over 3,000 in total.  There are still over 1,000 swans on the main lagoon each evening, making for a very special swan spectacle at the floodlit feeds.

One particualr Bewick's swan, Daisy Clarke, arrived back this week.  We have been following her migration closely from Arctic Russia as she has a GPS collar fitted.  She, along with several other Bewick's swans, have been providing valuable information on the migratory route, highlighting important wetland sites the birds stop off at along their journey, the routes they take across large bodies of water such as the North Sea and what how long they stay or don't stay in certain areas which could highlight problem areas.

If you want great views of Bewick's it is best not to wait, but visit now while the birds are close to the hides.  The flight in is increadible too as the swans are all flying onto the pools of water right before you at dusk.
