Bird News

Bitterly cold winds seem to have slowed things down a little over the last couple of days, with no new arrivals, and noticably fewer singing birds. Even the Black-headed Gull colony seems less active than normal.

A pair of Common Terns has been touring the reserve, and one or both of them have been seen from most of the hides.

Still a few Ruff remaining up until yesterday at least, and other waders including good numbers of Lapwing, Redshank, Oystercatcher and Avocet are now in residence for the summer. Little Ringed Plover and Common Sandpiper are also fairly easy to find, although in much smaller numbers (only 2 or 3 of each).

Mediterranean Gulls are still being seen on the Mere, although again only 2 or 3 different birds over the last few days, and only one obvious pair.

2 Sedge Warlers were near the Ron Barker hide today, where Kingfisher is again being seen fairly regularly.
