Latest Sightings
Many of the birds throughout the reserve have now entered breeding mode with many species displaying frequently throughout the day. Chiffchaffs are our newest arrival with many now singing across the reserve, the lapwings have also began incubating eggs.

Latest sightings
Spring is beginning here at Martin Mere, with blooming daffodils and snowdrops carpeting the reserve. The first Mediterranean gulls and avocets arrived on the Mere the previous week.

The first avocets of the year; a group of around forty, were sighted on the mere yesterday.

Latest sightings
The past week's cold weather has brought the whooper swans back onto the Mere, with around 900 seen at our last dawn counts, their whooping calls heard all throughout the reserve day and night.

This week we took part in the Big Garden Bird Watch at the Janet Kear hide. With a total of 20 species we saw: 7 Blue tits, 6 Great tits, 15 Goldfinches, 10 Greenfinches, 14 Chaffinches, 1 Redpoll, 4 Blackbirds, 1 Coal tit, 1 Dunnock, 3 Robin, 1 Treecreep

Martin Mere is unfortunately still closed to the public but our staff and volunteers are still hard at work on the reserve. The cold weather has brought in a good number of fieldfares and redwings; winter migrant thrushes to Britain.

Martin Mere remains closed to the public but our staff and volunteers are still hard at work carrying out habitat management and feeding the swans. Kestrels, marsh harriers and barn owls still seen daily on the reserve.
