A female cuckoo in rufous plumage was spotted at the along the public footpath behind the canoe safari. Tern chicks are starting to fledge on the Mere. There are two marsh harriers performing food passes at Ron Barker which suggest that they're nesting

A nuthatch was spotted in the trees along the trail to Ron Barker. Common terns have been making use of the new rafts we put out for them on the Mere, with at least one chick having fledged this week.

A barn owl has been spotted hunting over Long Meadow and Woodend Marsh. Bee Orchids have started sprouting in the bowl in front of harrier hide. Also, small skippers, large skippers, red admirals and meadow browns have started to be seen on the reserve.Ph

The Ruddy Shelduck, likely an escapee, was seen again today on the Mere and in the Grounds. Plenty of young birds have fledged over the last two weeks, keep an eye out for fledgling black-headed gulls with their patchy juvenile plumage.
