Cattle Egret again

The weekend rain has driven up water levels for now, this has encouraged some birds to move on, the levels will drop again if we do not get any more heavy rain which will expose wet mud for the next batch of waders.

Three Redshank, 11 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Green Sandpiper on the lower pond, a new brood of Tufted Duck on the Top pond.

11 Green Sandpiper and a juvenile Shelduck present this morning.

Holden Tower

When the cattle herd were feeding in the dry scrape they were accompanied by a few Yellow Wagtail and a flock of Sand Martins. A Peregrine was out on the foreshore fence posts. The Cattle Egret was also present early morning but roamed the reserve spending time on the islands of the Top New Piece and amongst cattle in the Bottom New Piece.

The CATTLE EGRET spent more time here than other sites today, 27 Avocet, 54 Dunlin, a few Redshank and 5 Black-tailed Godwit were alongside 30 Teal on the flood. A brood of 6 Shoveler were well grown with a couple of broods of Gadwall also viewable and up to 5 Cranes.

South Lake

Single Green Sandpiper, three Dunlin, 8 Ruff, 220 Black-tailed godwit, 120 Lapwing and a variety of duck species were all seen today.

Large Red Underwing moth resting on the marquee, Little Grebe and four Tufted Duck broods on the pond.
