Cloudy skies

A cloudy start to the day and it looks like it is set to continue and remain grey.

Rushy

The recently hatched oystercatcher chicks are out just in front of the Rushy Pen Hide, with their adults staying near. Again the avocet chicks are still around, at least 4, with 6 adults being seen. There was one lapwing around, along with black-headed gulls still incubating eggs.

Holden Tower and Tack Piece

Coming across the bridge to the Martin Smith Hide the brood of 11 shelduck ducklings being looked after by their parents. And among the reeds in front of the hide the little egret is still around. A crane pair were feeding on the Tack Piece. The two little lapwing chicks, 2, are still around and can be seen in front of the Robbie Garnett Hide and 2 avocets with 2 small chicks close by. There are also lots of warblers, in particular reed warblers and skylarks singing and calling in the hedges. Two swallows passed over the Dumbles towards the centre.

Zeiss Hide

Four shoveler were seen distantly from the hide. Among the reeds were reed buntings flitting around, and 6 swifts passed over.

Kingfisher Hide

The kingfisher was sat at just outside the hide and they are still feeding young. A grey heron was also seen further down the rhine.

South Lake

The crane was still sat on the nest incubating the pair of eggs, and at least two avocets were also sitting on their nest. Again there are more chicks and ducklings, there was 16 shelduck ducklings with 4 adults, suggesting they are two broods. A variety of sizes of avocet chicks can now be seen with 26 adults being seen. Four oystercatchers and one lapwing were also here. The flock black-tailed godwits, 120 in total, were present here but did seem quite jumpy and flying off quite frequently. There was also one little ringed plover seen easily from the Hogarth Hide so keep an eye out if you can see it through the rest of the day.
