Common Terns

The Common Terns nesting on the Mere this year so far seem to be doing very well with the second pair hatching at least 2 chicks this morning, so that's at least 5 chicks on that island and another pair hopefully to hatch more young on the second island.

There are Mediterranean Gulls continuing to show very well around the Mere with at least 3 birds today, 2 adults and a 1st summer/2nd cal year bird. Plenty of young Black-headed Gulls at various stages including the first few that have successfully fledged and are now to be seen flying around the Mere, with many more to come.

Some counts from the latest WEBs count on site: 39 Gadwall, 13 Teal, 562 Mallard, 1 Pintail, 10 Shoveler, 3 Pochard, 10 Tufted Duck, 152 Shelduck, 71 Greylag Goose, 13 Canada Goose, 93 Moorhen, 53 Coot, 200+ Lapwing, 26 Avocet, 4 Whooper Swan and 2 Little Egret.

Just off site yesterday a Cuckoo was in the trees along Curlew Lane, also Yellow Wagtail and Corn Buntings here.
