Day 1: How does a duckling develop inside an egg

All this week we will be telling you all about how a duckling develops inside an egg for the forthcoming Downy Duckling Week starting on Saturday 25 May.

1 week incubation

1 weekWe know that this egg is fertile because you can see small veins that extend out from a kidney bean embryo that will eventually become the duckling. The airspace is quite small at the moment and this will increase as the duckling develops and the egg will actually loose weight. This is because the egg looses water through evaporation and the egg white and yolk are used as a feeding source for the developing duckling.

Tomorrow we will show you what an egg looks like after 2 - 3 weeks incubation, but why not come down from Saturday to see all of this in front of your eyes.
