Duckery update
The latest news on what’s been ‘matching and hatching' among our rare and endangered waterbirds...
The breeding season is coming to a close up at the duckery, but there’s still time to see some fluffy babies in the indoor rearing units, including beautiful red-billed whistling ducks.
During 2013 we’ve successfully bred a number of different species, some of which can still be found in the outside pens.
These include: Andean goose, Baer’s pochard, Chiloe wigeon, common white-eye, eider, Eurasian wigeon, mandarins, Meller’s duck, Northern pintail, Northern shoveler, Philippine duck, puna teal, red-breasted goose, red shoveler, red-billed whistling duck, ringed teal, Ross’ goose, ruddy shelduck, South Georgian pintail, white-headed duck, white-faced whistling duck and...we’re waiting to see if the Abyssinian blue-wing geese and South American comb ducks successfully hatch!
Also, our beautiful pink Chilean flamingos have been flirting furiously during the recent warm weather. Could this be the year that they produce eggs after a six-year hiatus!?
