Fieldfare in the Hedgerows

After the first Redwing was observed on the Reserve last week, we have now recorded the first of the returning Fieldfare. Numbers are still low for both species but they are best watched for on a wander down the Avenue. The Hawthorn berries are ripening up nicely down the Loaning so should give them something to eat, once they've had a bit of frost on them. A Brambling was heard calling in the Wildlife Garden yesterday so do keep your ears open for that one if visiting. Whooper Swan numbers have increased up to 57 birds, however they have decided the surrounding stubble and tattie fields are much better fodder so are feeding off the Reserve. The Great Egret and Ringtail Hen Harrier have both been observed out on the Merse from the Saltcot Observatory in the past few days.
