Find out how your support is helping the UK soak up a million new homes

65_SL_James_Stevens_September_2015With your backing, we’ve been working hard at Westminster to persuade politicians of the benefits of wetlands.

Our Deputy CEO Kevin Peberdy appeared before a Committee of MPs, to advise them how more wetlands could help reduce flooding, drought and pollution as well as being great for wildlife.

We’ve also won an amendment to a Parliamentary Bill on building new houses in the House of Lords. It’s now going back and forth with the Commons for the final decision. As a result, more new homes could drain rainwater run-off into wildlife features like ponds, rather than pouring into already overloaded drains that can cause flooding at pinch points downstream. The Government needs to build a million new homes by 2020.

Northern Ireland and Scotland already take this approach while Wales has extensive guidelines on building sustainable drainage features. WWT’s amendment should help England to catch up with the other home nations and build homes that are better for wildlife and people.
