Five cygnets hatch at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre
WWT Martin Mere’s black swans have defied the recent cold weather to hatch 5 cygnets this week.
Centre Manager, Andy Wooldridge, said: “The black swans were paired together last year and they immediately had 3 cygnets last March, so it is fantastic that they are a breeding again. All cygnets are doing well and our visitors are really enjoying watching them whilst trying to get that perfect picture”.
The swans have been sitting on the eggs for the last month and staff at the centre were uncertain as to whether they would hatch due to the bitterly cold weather conditions we have seen recently. This hatching has marked the start of the ‘New Life’ season at Martin Mere. Goslings, ducklings, chicks and cygnets will start springing up around the centre and reserve over the next few months.
The black swans can be found in the Africa area of the waterfowl gardens.
