Geese numbers after the goose count

We started goose counts at the weekend to see the extent of the predicted decline of the pink-footed geese. These counts are nationally co-ordinated and the results in Lancashire are:

Total: 77,683

Wyre estuary 7300

Cocker’s Dyke 2650

 Pilling 29082

 MMWWT 6150

Ribble estuary 8801

Alt estuary/Taylor’s bank 20200

 Simonswood 3500

We won't know until the end of November, whether the birds are in decline as it is difficult to tell whilst the migration is happening and all of the birds are continuously moving.  We have taken a number of calls today from residents in Lytham saying that thousands have been flying over from late last night to lunch time today. Lets see if they come into roost at Martin Mere tonight!
