Highlights for 27 December

Lapwings over South Lake

Late news for yesterday included the following highlights...

The Dark-bellied Brent Goose was still with the Canada Goose flock on the Dumbles. A count of 221 Curlew on the mudflats was of note.
The regular Little Stint was feeding with a Dunlin on the Rushy Pen.
A Merlin, immature Peregrine, three Buzzard and two Bitterns were seen from the Zeiss Hide late morning-midday.

Immature Peregrine

Afternoon temperatures allowed for a thaw so the Top New Piece and Tack Piece both attracted birds including 600 Wigeon, 500 Teal and 500 Lapwing at the former and 13 Crane, 300 Wigeon and 500 Lapwing at the latter site. The deep water on the South Lake remained ice free as did the Rushy Pen, Decoy Pond and South Finger reed bed. The South Finger path is a great place to catch up with Goldcrest and Treecreepers with daily sightings of them.
