Increasing lapwing numbers

Last weekend we had about 70 lapwing in each day. On Monday our Reserve staff counted 163 lapwing between Ramsar and Sand Martin hide and more in the air.

At 3.30 pm there was still about 70 lapwing on the third islands there along with a very annoyed cormorant. The egret roost about 45 minutes later had 60 egrets and a grey heron in the top the the tree to the right of the Ramsar hide. At least three snipe were in the fen cut directly in front and to the right of the hide most days.

Arun Riverlife: 39 mallards, 13 coots, 2 moorhens, 8 Canada geese, 11 greylag geese, 6 tufted ducks, 1 pochard, 30 black-headed gulls,

Sand Martin hide: 1 cormorant, 4 teal, 7 gadwall

Scrape hide: 8 shoveler, 2 Canada geese, 3 gadwall, 2 snipe

Arun Riverlife: 7 tufted ducks, 17 coots

Wood Loop: 3 blue tits, 1 long tailed tit, 2 gold crest, 1 wren 1 mandarin duck

Ramsar hide: 7 Canada geese, 4 greylag geese, 7 tufted ducks, 9 gadwall, 2 shoveler, 13 teal, 4 shelducks, 3 snipe, 1 great egret, 5 cormorants, 71 lapwing
