Latest Sightings
Its been a busy week on the reserve for birds! As spring is in full swing, warbler activity has been on the up, with reports of grasshopper warblers, reed warblers, and sedge warblers, alongside the cetti's warblers in the reedbed. Blackcaps have also been heard singing within the grounds.
Avocet numbers have been high, as they begin to look for areas to breed, with around 70 having been seen early on Tuesday at Woodend marsh. Also on the marsh have been stonechats and linnets so keep an eye out!
In terms of birds of prey, a red kite was seen on Tuesday, and kestrels and marsh harriers have paired up, and are scouting out potential nesting locations.
Pairs of med gulls have been sighted most days, look out for them in amongst the black-headed gulls dotted about the mere. More than 50 black-tailed godwits are still present outside Discovery hide, make sure to see them before they leave us for their breeding grounds!
A common sandpiper was seen on Wednesday from the viewing screens down catty bank, and swallow and house martins have also been spotted flying over the reserve.
