Latest Sightings
On Wednesday evening’s Goose Spectacular, we saw over 10,000 Pink-Footed Geese flying over the Mere, as well as a Grey Heron and a Buzzard. We counted 2,834 Pink-Footed Geese still on the Mere at dawn.
The captivating Snow Goose is still present and can be seen amongst the Greylag and Canada Geese from Discovery hide or the viewing platforms.
An unusual sighting this week was a Swan Goose, which was spotted on the Mere on Tuesday and Wednesday, but there are no current sightings today. The Swan Goose is an Asian species which has been domesticated.
Today, we have a total of 39 Whooper Swans which can be seen from Discovery or Ron Barker hide – 4 of these are cygnets (juveniles) with grey coloration.
Also seen on the Mere; 1 Green Winged Teal, 4 Shelduck, 2 Snipe, 2 Great White Egret, Pochard, Wigeon and Pintail.
15 Cattle Egret were observed today – you can spot these birds around the cows when walking up the trail towards Tomlinson and Gordon Taylor hide.
Sightings from Ron Barker hide this week includes 1 male Hen Harrier, 2 Kingfisher, and 2 Water Rail.
