Season's greetings! A stroll through nature is the best way to unwind, so come to Martin Mere to enjoy everything wildlife has to offer.
1 Snow Goose has been spotted once again on the mere. It is a rare vagrant that arrived here with ~10,000 overwintering Pink-Footed Geese.
Hundreds of Whooper Swans migrated here from Iceland, and you can see them up close every day in our Discovery Hide at the 3pm Wild Bird Feed.
Other species you will see on the mere are; Pintail, Shelducks, Wigeon, Mallards, Pochard, Tufted Ducks, Shoveler, Greylag Geese, Mute Swans, Lapwings, Cormorants, Black-Tailed Godwits, Ruff, Moorhen and Coot.
Snipe are best seen from the viewing platforms. Teal can be seen in the water by the trail to Gordon Taylor and Tomlinson hide, where a Grey Heron can also be seen regularly.
This week, 5 Goosander were observed at Rees hide and 5 Bullfinch were seen at Raines Observatory.
1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Buzzards, 1 Fieldfare, and 1 Water Rail were recorded at Ron Barker hide.
1 Kingfisher was spotted in the captive bird collection, near Janet Kear hide. Another Kingfisher is usually visible at Ron Barker hide.
You can see songbirds at Janet Kear hide on the feeders, such as Goldfinches and Greenfinches.
The nature trail leading to the Kingfisher hide is also a great place to hear the melodies of numerous species. There are inquisitive Robins, as well as Blue Tits, Long-Tailed Tits, Great Tits, Chaffinch, Blackbirds and Song Thrush.
1 Great White Egret was visible from Harrier hide this morning. Take a walk through our reedbeds where Starlings, Cetti's Warbler and Bearded Tits roost, and Marsh Harriers can be seen flying and hunting in the skies overhead.
