Latest Sightings

At dawn today, 2090 Pink-Footed Geese and 660 Whooper Swans were counted on the nature reserve.

The Pink-Footed Geese have been very active, flying between Plover Field (the back of the Main Mere) and Lord's Mere (Ron Barker hide).

Around the end of February, these overwintering waterfowl should return to Iceland and Greenland, so take advantage of the opportunity to visit the site while they are still here.

You can view the Whooper Swans up close every day from the Discovery hide during our 3pm Wild Bird Feed. Other species feeding amongst them are Pintail, Shelduck, Mallard, Pochard, Black-Tailed Godwits, Ruff, Greylag Geese, Mute Swans and Coot.

3 Tufted Ducks and 1 Kestrel have been spotted on the Mere this morning. On the bank of the Mere, Snipe can often be seen hiding in the vegetation.

24 Cormorants were observed swimming and sunbathing on the floating rafts on the Mere. Many Lapwings can also be seen flying around together in large flocks.

1 Grey Heron was seen soaring above the Mere. 4 Little Egret and 1 Great White Egret were seen recently around Harrier Hide and the Reedbed Walk.

10 Marsh Harriers were seen from Ron Barker hide, as well as 1 Barn Owl and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker on the nature trail leading towards the hide.

Around 30 Canada Geese were sat on Plover Field yesterday and were seen from Ron Barker hide today.

In the late afternoon yesterday, 1 Fieldfare was observed outside of the Bird Observatory. On the path to Janet Kear and around the feeders, there have been Redwing, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Dunnock, Blue Tit, Long-Tailed Tit, Great Tit, Robin and Song Thrush.
