Pink-footed Geese from October 2014

Starting off with a picture from 2014 just in case you are thinking there has been a mass arrival overnight! There was a report of a few birds out on the Ribble a week ago but they seem to have disappeared and other recent reports appear to relate to evening fly overs of Greylag/Canada.

In fact as far as we can tell there have been no reports of any numbers arriving in Scotland or leaving Iceland for that matter and in the age of the internet these  tend to be broadcast immediately. The current forecast suggested there will be very little change in the next the next 7 days.

On the wildfowl front feral Greylag numbers have risen to 540. A partial duck count included 49 Gadwall, 25 Shoveler, 5 Wigeon, 2 Pintail and Pochard.

Waders included 600+ Lapwing, 50+ Snipe, 2 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Golden Plover, 3 Dunlin, Green Sandpiper, 30 Ruff and a possible Curlew Sandpiper yesterday.

Raptors over the past two days included 3 Marsh Harrier (all juv), 6+ Common Buzzard, Perergrine, 3 Kestrel and 2 Sparrowhawk.

Grey Wagtail today with some noted on the move locally.

Other reports included 4 Little Grebe and 2 Kingfisher.
