Café kitchen closure

From 8–17 September, our café kitchen will be closed for refurbishment. During this time, our front-of-house will remain open, offering a selection of cakes and ice cream, sandwiches, and drinks. You will also be able to visit our kiosks by the play areas.

Latest Sightings

Changeable weather over the past few days and similar for the weekend so could be interesting for waders.

More Ruff arriving with at least 8 different birds present, quickly moulting out of breeding plumage. Highly variable birds including one with a Black-tailed Godwit look to it.

'Short-billed Godwit'... oh hold on that's a Ruff!

Other waders present included 150+ Black-tailed Godwit, 200+ Lapwing, 6+ Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover, 6 Dunlin, Avocet, 4 Redshank, 4 Oystercatcher and Green Sandpiper.

On the raptor front Kestrel 4+ including juveniles, 6 Buzzard (some distant), Sparrowhawk and Peregrine. Barn Owl early on and unusually, a Tawny Owl flew over the Reed Bed viewed from the Harrier Hide.

Dragon and damselflies along the Reedbed Walk, also butterflies there and along the Naturetrail in general particularly when the sun gets out.

Assorted warblers seen around the reserve including Chiffchaff by the Kingfisher Hide, Sedge, Reed and Whitethroat from the Reedbed Walk.

Common Tern 2+ on Woodend Marsh. Great-spotted Woodpecker from the Janet Kear Hide.

Nearby off the reserve Corn Bunting singing on territories. Along Curlew Lane Yellow Wagtails including juvenile birds, Pied Wagtails, Skylarks and Red-legged Partridge.
