Latest Sightings

After the weekends cold weather it was noticeably warm this morning and feeling almost hot in the sun early afternoon.

The early showers produced a few Sand Martin feeding in sheltered spots around the reserve and at least one Swallow.

Bittern still booming this morning heard from the Harrier Hide or the public footpath on the Outer Reed Bed.

At least 3 Med Gull with two adults displaying on the Mere early afternoon.

Waders included 150+ Black-tailed Godwit, 40+ Avocet, 16 Snipe, 10+ Oystercatcher, 20+ Lapwing, 4 Redshank and 30+ Ruff.

Raptors included 6+ Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, 2 Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. Barn Owl early on from the Outer Reed Bed.

Winter flavoured sightings included female Brambling from the Kingfisher Hide and 50+ Fieldfare in poplars off Marsh Moss Lane.

20 Corn Bunting at the end of Long Hedge, Bullfinches and Chiffchaff singing by the Sewage Works.

If you are visiting Martin Mere for the first time and would like to know what is around and the best areas to see specific species do call in at the in focus shop, next to the Discovery Hide which over looks the Mere. It should be possible to see over 60 species in a day without too much difficulty.
