Latest Sightings

A noticeable build up in numbers of many of our Winter visitors is taking place at the moment with a fantastic combination of large numbers of birds and nice weather.

Wildfowl are, as always, the most visible birds on site. Numbers of Whooper Swan are now approaching 200, with many more arriving in the coming days and weeks. The following is a list of numbers recorded during the WeBS count on Monday, but by today, numbers of every species on the list have increased.

Whooper Swan 18, Greylag Goose 221, Canada Goose 30, Shelduck 25, Wigeon 31, Gadwall 4, Teal 1,068, Mallard 892,  Pintail 15, Shoveler 44, Pochard 2, Tufted Duck 5.

Raptors include 2 or 3 Marsh Harriers, several Common Buzzards, Peregrine and Sparrowhawk.

Some movements of winter thrushes and Wood Pigeon were locally noted on Thursday.

Twenty or more Snipe, similar numbers of Ruff, 250+ Lapwings and a Black-tailed Godwit were seen on the Mere today, as were Little Egret, Grey Heron, Kingfisher, several Cormorants and 5 species of Gull.
