Latest Sightings

After last weeks wind and rain the current weather is a dream and the mostly west-ish facing hides are comfortable when the wind is coming from the east.

Continuing a good run for raptors in the past days we have had daily Merlin, 2 Peregrine (ad female and juvenile), 4+ Marsh Harrier, 4+ Buzzard, 2 Kestrel and 2 Sparrowhawk.

Two Barn Owl are out and about early and late although yesterday one bird was hunting at 12.30pm. Two Tawny Owl can be seen roosting (call in at the in focus shop for directions).

A striking 'satellite' male Ruff which retains a white head in non-breeding plumage.

On the wader front at least 800 Lapwing, 60+ Ruff, 11 Black-tailed Godwit, 6+ Snipe, Redshank and Dunlin today.

Wildfowl counts included 722 Whooper Swan of which there were 98 family groups with 155 juveniles. Possibly some new Pink-footed Geese in the area with recent high flying skeins coming in.

A good selection of non wading/waterfowl birds to be had around the reserve and inside the grounds. A couple of Kingfisher have been regularly seen from the Ron Barker Hide and in the collection area.

Along the nature trail keep an eye out for the Long-tailed Tit flock which can have Goldcrest in attendance. Water Rail along the bank edge opposite the Ron Barker Hide. Cetti's Warbler's calling to the left of the Ron Barker Hide and on the Reed Bed Walk.

A few Pied Wagtail present feeding on the more exposed areas around the reserve. Two Chiffchaff this morning feeding in bramble and ivy opposite the in focus shop.
