Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Latest Sightings

Few reports on an awful day weather wise which didn't turn up many new birds and few sightings reported. Despite the weather birds reported included 3 Pintail on the Mere along with 200 Teal and 8 Wigeon and 15 Shoveler and 2 Mute Swans.

4000+ Pink-footed Geese in the area today

A count of 16 Ruff including some nice juveniles as well as 100 Snipe on the Mere and 1000 Lapwing.

At least 4 Marsh Harrier.

The Willow Tit was seen again at Janet Kear Hide.

A Grey Wagtail was on the island in front of Discovery hide. A flock of 10+ Long-tailed Tit, 1 Coal Tit, 2 Goldcrest, 1 Chiffchaff and a male Blackcap were in bushes by the In Focus shop.
