Latest Sightings

A cold and frosty few days, excellent conditions for seeing Martin Mere at its best. Over 800 Whooper Swan and 7000+ Pink-footed Geese roosting on the reserve with some good numbers coming in during the day to feed on potatoes on Top Mere.

Good for raptors with 7 species recorded; Peregrine, 2 Merlin 4+ Marsh Harrier, 4+ Buzzard, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and a male adult Hen Harrier again reported yesterday. Two Barn Owl from early afternoon.

A Great White Egret flew over the reserve early afternoon. At least 4 Little Egret present.

A female Goldeneye (the first this winter) joined Pochard and Tufted Ducks feeding in front of the Discovery Hide. Mere counts included 512 Shelduck, 184 Pintail, 279 Wigeon and 52 Pochard.

Water Rail(s) seen and heard on the Reed Bed. At least 3 Cetti's Warbler calling there Three Kingfisher seen yesterday.

The Ruff count is up with 59 birds present.

Along the Nature Trail a good selection of assorted species including; Bullfinch, Coal Tit, Goldcrest, Fieldfare, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush and Redwing.

It's possible to see over 60 species in a day on the reserve.
