Latest sightings
Thew weather has been great and the birds are loving it! The warblers are singing setting up territories, more willow warblers have arrived, chiffchaffs are nest building. Corn buntings have come back and are jiggling. There are a few stonechats still around.
The lapwing nests should hatch soon, the oystercatchers are on eggs. We still have a few black-tailed godwits around and the green sandpipers are still passing through. The avocet numbers are incresing we dont have any nesting yet but they have paired up.
The black-headed gulls are nesting, we have kept the water levels high on the mere so when the common terns arrive we can lower the water levels and provide areas of the islands which dont have gulls already nesting on (this worked really well last year and we had 3 pairs that fledged 6 chicks!)
The nature trail looks great with lots of wildflowers out including primroses, bluebells, cowslips and marsh marigold.
A few butterflies are on the wing now, we have seen orange tips, peacocks, large white, small tortoiseshell and comma.
The grounds, the nature reserve and all hides and paths are closed at WWT Martin Mere, following government guidance on Covid-19. A small team of essential staff is working on site looking after the animals and completing essential tasks on the reserve. Please do not attempt to visit the site as you will be putting our staff and yourself at risk.
