Latest sightings

Another sunny week and the cuckoo's have been very active in the reedbed calling lots and flying around, there is at least 1 male and 1 female. We picked up an otter and cub on our trail camera, we have put the video on our Facebook page.

The lapwing chicks are now getting huge, there are 23 avocet nests on the reserve. The oystercatcher nest in the Chilean flamingo pen is due to hatch soon. Woodend marsh is drying out with this hot weather and we have now run out of pumping allowance with our abstraction licence (we have applied for an increase) so unfortunately we can't pump anymore water on there this year.

Plenty of fledgling skylarks around the site and lots of reed buntings are now feeding young. Plenty of reed warblers in the reedbed. The first brood of tree sparrows are due to fledge this week.

Lots of wall butterflies on the wing this week around the site, also orange tips, peacocks, small tortoiseshells and common blues.

The grounds, the nature reserve and all hides and paths are closed at WWT Martin Mere, following government guidance on Covid-19. A small team of essential staff is working on site looking after the animals and completing essential tasks on the reserve. Please do not attempt to visit the site as you will be putting our staff and yourself at risk.
