Latest sightings

At least 6 med gulls on the mere, one is a recently fledged chick unfortunately not from here but we possibly have 2 med gull nests. The black headed gulls have fledged lots of chicks this year, the common tern chicks are getting bigger and the adults are often seen feeding over the reedbed and Ron Barker.

Lots of Swifts on the reserve feeding over the mere. The cuckoo chick had been seen again this week by the Gordon Taylor hide from the track and the bridge.

The cattle will hopefully be grazing the mere from tomorrow. We have a herd of English longhorn cattle, this will be the first time they have grazed the mere, they are a great hardy breed, they will muddy up the pool edges for the passage waders, the cow dung will provide lots of insects, they will graze the rough grasses and over the next few years the sward will change from being rough and rank to short with lots of wildflowers which will be perfect for the pink-footed geese.
