Latest sightings

The recent cold snap has increased the number of birds on the reserve. Amazing photo by Neil Fleming of a short eared owl flying over the reedbed. The bearded tits are still being very elusive in the reedbed and only heard this week. Still lots of birds of prey on the reserve most days you can see kestrel, sparrowhawk, peregrine, buzzard and upto 9 marsh harriers!!! The mere looks fantastic and is full of birds. Latest dawn count 1046 Whooper swans, 17400 pink-footed geese, which is really high counts for this time of year. Lots of ducks on the mere with around 500 shelduck, 300 pintail, 1000 teal also 1000 lapwing and 33 ruff.
