Migration Arrivals

A sunny start with freshening winds later on. An early morning count of 1600 Pink-footed Geese was exceptional on such an early date. We can expect the numbers to increase considerably in the next few weeks if a sustained North Westerly airflow comes out of Iceland/Greenland. Mid afternoon we had 1800 on Plover Field.

A group of 13 Wigeon were new in and 5 Pintail turned up yesterday, all signs of autumn arrivals onto the reserve.

On the wader front good numbers of Snipe are active around the Mere (30+), more across the whole reserve. Also 400+ Lapwing, 300+ Black-tailed Godwit, 40+ Ruff.

At least 3 Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, 3+ Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and 2 Kestrel. At least one Raven this morning.

Some large flocks of Goldfinch out on the reserve (200+).
