New exhibit opening: our 2nd new species

On Friday, WWT Martin Mere will be officially opening our new Weird or Wonderful? development. As part of this development we have 4 new species coming to Martin Mere and everyday this week we will feature one of the new species before the launch on Friday.

Argentine ruddy duckToday’s new species: Argentine Ruddy Duck

This duck will be located on the main lake and you will see them as you cross over the new bridge walkway on the main lake.

Ruddy ducks are expert divers. Their streamline body and powerful legs and feet set back on their body are designed to propel them through the water.  The amazing stiff tail acts as rudder helping them to quickly change direction.  Their tail is so stiff that it stands upright when resting, making great photography opportunities.

The Argentine Ruddy Duck will share the main lake with many of your favourite species including a family of black swans, red-crested pochard and hooded merganser.
