New exhibit opening tomorrow: 4th new species

Friday, WWT Martin Mere will be officially opening our new Weird or Wonderful? development. As part of this development we have 4 new species coming to Martin Mere and everyday this week we will feature one of the new species before the launch on Friday.

photoToday’s new species: African Comb duck

The comb duck will be located on the large grass area to the right of the bridge.

Male comb ducks are very large birds with a big black knob on the bill that the females do not have. Size is everything for males! The fleshy comb or knob is small for much of the year but gets larger at breeding time. Males with the largest comb are more likely to attract a mate!

Listen out for the hiss, wheeze, croak and whistle of displaying males. Females quack, grunt and whine making this a very unusual bird.
