New species arrive for new exhibit opening on Friday

On Friday, WWT Martin Mere will be officially opening our new Weird or Wonderful? development. As part of this development we have 4 new species coming to Martin Mere and everyday this week we will feature one of the new species before the launch on Friday.

Today's new species: Avocet

The avocet will be located in the new walk-in aviary allowing photographers to get up close to this fascinating wader (picture credit: Martin Birchall). Avocets have long upturned bills that is perfectly adapted to sweeping side to side taking food from the surface of the water as its wades along. Their long legs, webbed feet and the fact that males and females look similar, made this species an obvious choice to be included within WOW?  They will share the aviary with white-faced whistling ducks and African grey-crowned cranes as well as another new species we will tell you about later in the week.

The aviary is going to be a great new edition to the centre.
