Otterly exciting news
Remember when our Asian short-clawed otter Little Squeak was only this big and we were all excited about her safe arrival!?
Well, we’re feeling (cautiously) excited again because this morning (Thursday 3 March) we entered the holt area at 8.30am and heard what we think may be the squeak of a baby/babies. We know!
Mimi has put on a little weight recently and shown some signs of pregnancy, so we’ve been monitoring her closely. We’ll now continue to sensitively monitor the situation and as long as we continue to hear squeaks – and Mimi, Musa and Little Squeak behave as we’d expect them to – we won’t enter the holt again until 13 March. This will allow the family to bond and any babies to develop undisturbed at this critical time.
It’s very difficult to tell by sound alone how many babies there could be, so we won’t know more until we undertake visual checks around 11 March.
Until then, the holt area will be cordoned off to give our otters the peace and quiet that they need.
